Project Coordinator (Education)

About Voices GY

Voices GY is a registered Guyanese non-profit organisation, active since April 2018. Our mission is to empower diverse and inclusive communities through strengthening social cohesion, cultural integration and human rights. Previous projects have included English tuition for migrants and refugees; support through training and grants to migrant entrepreneurs; regional needs assessments on education and social integration; mental health support; social cohesion events; and multimedia productions on minority rights and cultures.

Background

The role of Education in enabling communities to determine their own opportunities for development is not a new concept, and it is an area in which Voices GY have worked from the start. Within Guyana, the access to education and the quality of education available vary upon geographical and socio-demographic lines, with many of the most vulnerable in society - including refugees and migrants - missing out on tangible opportunities to better their futures. Voices GY has worked to support educational initiatives since early 2018 through social events, ESL classes, Spanish classes for persons working with refugees and migrants, public advocacy campaigns and needs assessments.

All of Voices GY’s projects seek to take an educational perspective into account, in order to build skills and capacities for lasting impact. In 2021, Voices GY will formalise the Education programmatic area within the organisation to coordinate all activities with Education as a core goal.

About the role

Within the Education programmatic area, the Project Coordinator will oversee a range of educational interventions and work with diverse donors and demographics in order to synthesise Voices GY’s goals in this area. In addition, the Project Coordinator will work with indigenous communities in Region 1 to advocate for greater inclusion and prioritization of indigenous languages in education.
