Project Officer (Democracy and Participation)

About Voices GY

Voices GY is a registered Guyanese non-profit organisation, active since April 2018. Our mission is to empower the voices of our communities, through strengthening social cohesion, cultural integration and human rights in the country. As an organisation, we are founded on a community-based approach which prioritises building the capacities of marginalised communities to lead their own development in a Guyana that values and respects diversity and inclusion. Our work is organised under three main areas: Migration, Culture and Environment.

About the role

Voices GY’s largest area of work to date has been that of Migration. In partnership with organisations such as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM Guyana) and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), Voices GY supports between 150-300 refugees, migrants and Guyanese each week through our programmes. These include the largest online ESL program in the region; a pioneering small business programme with training, branding and micro-grant support; and an intercultural and bilingual education pilot programme focused on mainstreaming and strengthening indigenous languages spoken by migrants and host communities; among many others.

At the core of Voices GY's work is the desire to support vulnerable populations with the skills and means by which to dictate their own development. Voices GY's latest initiative, in collaboration with the US Embassy in Guyana under the aegis of the Julia Taft Refugee Fund, looks to support vulnerable migrants and Guyanese returnees with greater access to information, increased opportunities for participation in decision making affecting their communities, and the institutional support to organise campaigns and groups focused on migration assistance led by migrants themselves. This will take the shape of a 12-week course aimed at building migrant leaders (Migrant Focal Points (MFPs)) and supporting a small number of graduates with capstone projects, as well as designing a guide for policy makers on including migrant voices in decision making and an asynchronous e-course for migrants to lead in their communities.

The Project Officer (Democracy and Participation) position at Voices GY is a new position, and will lead the implementation of the 8-month project with the US Embassy in Guyana. The Project Officer will engage with Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitian and Guyanese re-migrants, as well as with government and civil society stakeholders in order to ensure a successful roll-out of this project.
